Hi,today I'm feeling very happy and proud to share my home town nellore's most popular chepala pulusu (fish curry). Nellore is located in coastal Andhra which is very popular for chepala pulusu and many more. Yeah..... My nellore is very popular for chepala pulusu in Andhra and as well as in telangana. I wanted to share this recipe from quite long time.we prepare fish curry only on Friday, on Friday I will be very busy, so I couldn't take pics. But some how today I managed to take these pics and I couldn't stop my self from posting today.
Nellore chepala pulusu tastes very spicy, tangy and yummy. We make fish pulusu in two ways this is original recipe for nellore chepala pulusu. I have another easy method of making fish pulusu which we call " machhi ka khatta" in our language. Will share that recipe some other time. Coming to this recipe it so simple and easy process. Special addition to this pulusu is raw mango, yes if raw mango is available in market I highly recommend you to add raw mango in your fish pulusu.this fish curry tastes great with white rice and dosa.

Ingredients :
Fish pieces : 1 kg
Tamarind : 100 grams
Medium tomatoes : 5 to 6 (blend 2 tomatoes into puree)
roughly sliced Medium onions : 2
Medium raw mango : 1
green chillies : 3
curry leaves : 4 strings
Coriander leaves : 1/2 cup
Chilly powder : 2 table spoons
Coriander powder : 2 table spoons
turmeric powder : 1 tea spoon
Mustard seeds/aavaalu: 1 tea spoon
fenugreek seeds/mentulu : 1 tea spoon
Cumin seeds/jeelakara : 1 tea spoon
Salt to taste
For tempering :
Oil : 150 ml
Medium sliced onion : 1
curry leaves : 2 strings
Mustard seeds : 1 tea spoon
Method :
First soak tamarind in water for 15 minutes then squeeze and take out the juice by adding some water.
Now dry roast cumin seeds,mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds until they crackle, let it cool for some time and blend into a fine powder and keep a side
Now take fish pieces in big bowl add chilly powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, blended spice powder and salt mix it well.
Now add tomato puree, onions,green chillies, curry leaves, roughly sliced tomatoes and raw mango pieces. Add tamarind juice then pour 4 to 5 cups of water
Now for tempering heat oil in a wide pan add mustard seeds let them crackle then add remaining ingredients saute for few seconds and add prepared fish masala sprinkle coriander leaves cover and cook until gravy becomes thick.lift vessel in between and shake it gently.
When gravy becomes thick simmer the flame and cook for 5 to 10 minutes and remove fire and serve hot.
Note : Don't put any spatula to stir gravy. Just lift the vessel carefully gently shake it to avoid burning.
Soak tamarind in water |
Take fish pieces add chilly powder |
Add coriander powder |
Add turmeric powder |
Take mustard seeds,fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds |
Dry roast them |
Blend into a fine powder |
Add blended spice powder |
Add salt |
Mix it well |
Add tomato puree |
Add tomatoes, green chillies, curry leaves and onions |
Squeeze tamarind juice |
Add tamarind juice to fish |
Take raw mango peel and slice it |
Add sliced mango pieces mix it well |
Add water and mix it |
Now heat oil in a wide pan add mustard seeds |
Add remaining tempering ingredients |
Saute for few seconds |
Add prepared fish masala |
Add coriander leaves |
Cover and cook |
Don't use spatula to stir curry, just lift vessel carefully and shake it gently |
Shake gently in between |
Simmer the flame and cook for few minutes |
Now it's ready remove from f and serve. |
Yummy nellore chepala pulusu is ready |
